What is the impact of fossil fuels on New Mexico?

Oil and gas play an important role in the economy of New Mexico.

New Mexico ranked 7th in natural gas production and 8th in oil production in the United States in 2009.

Because of our abundance of fossil fuels, the oil and gas industry employs over 12,000 New Mexicans.

It’s important to remember, however, that the oil and gas industry doesn’t just help adults by creating jobs, it helps kids too. In 2009, oil and gas taxes and other payments to the State of New Mexico and local governments in New Mexico totaled $1.7 billion. Much of this money goes to fund public schools and state colleges. It is also used to construct public roads, buildings and state parks.
