Fracking is a safe and scientifically engineered process that has been used in New Mexico for more than 50 years without a single case of groundwater contamination.
Fracking uses very little of New Mexico’s precious fresh water. Improvements over the past ten years have reduced the use of fresh water in fracture treatments from roughly 100% of water used in the early 2010s to under 3% of water used in 2022.
According to the Oil Conservation Division’s records, fresh water made up less than 3% of all water used for well completion work (fracking) in the first quarter of 2022, down from nearly 100% just a decade earlier.
Thanks to fracking, New Mexico is one of the United States’ leading producers of oil and natural gas.
Without fracking, oil and gas production would be nearly non-existent in New Mexico.
New Mexico’s oil and gas industry workers and their families live and work in our communities and they take great pride in producing clean energy while protecting water resources for generations to come.
Fracking and all oil and gas activities are heavily regulated with strict requirements and enforcement at the federal, state, and local levels
