Groundwater Protection

The New Mexico Oil Conservation Division within the New Mexico Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department is responsible for the protection of underground and surface water. Oil wells are required to have industrial-grade steel casing surrounded by cement to create safeguards for freshwater supplies. Casing is a highly important element of well structure in terms of protecting groundwater resources because it provides the isolation of fresh water zones and groundwater from the inside of the well. In addition, cementation of the casing aids significantly in protecting groundwater resources.
