Albuquerque Hispano Chamber of Commerce | April 15, 2020
The Albuquerque Hispano Chamber of Commerce (AHCC) is excited to announce $85,500 in scholarships going to 64 New Mexico students. AHCC Education Excellence Scholarships are funded through sponsorships by local businesses, organizations, and individuals as well as funds raised by the AHCC Education Committee and annual AHCC Golf Tournament. In addition to the $1,000 AHCC Scholarship, awarded to high school seniors, non-traditional and/or returning students over the age of 19 receive a $1,000 dollar Opportunity Scholarship. For the second year in a row, the AHCC is proud to offer (5) high school seniors a multi-year Thrive Scholarship totaling $5,500 each, thanks to the chamber’s generous business members and partners.
“This year we saw a huge number of high-caliber students applying for scholarships,” said AHCC President, Ernie C’deBaca, “thankfully our members stepped up to help fund these scholarships at a higher rate than we have ever seen.” Ryan Flynn, Executive Director of the New Mexico Oil and Gas Association (NMOGA) said “the oil and gas industry is the major contributor to education in New Mexico. We are pleased to also contribute directly to many of these deserving students.” NMOGA sponsored a total of $25,000 in scholarships this year and is the Title Sponsor for this year’s Education Excellence Awards announcement.
Among the total 64 scholarships awarded were the Loretta A. Armenta Memorial Scholarship, the Jennifer Riordan Financial Literacy Scholarship, and the new Ken Sanchez Memorial Scholarship sponsored by NMOGA. “Ken Sanchez was a true public servant and we are proud to sponsor a memorial scholarship in his name for a business student in his district,” said Flynn.
This year’s recognition ceremony to honor the students and thank scholarship sponsors was canceled due to COVID-19 health restrictions. “It’s unfortunate,” said C’deBaca, “this event is always a great opportunity for scholarship recipients and sponsors to meet and connect – but like everyone else right now, we are finding other ways to celebrate this good news.”
