Member Spotlight: Flogistix’s vapor recovery units help operators decrease methane emissions in New Mexico

22 July, 2025

The New Mexico Oil and Gas Association (NMOGA) is proud of our membership’s commitment to environmental stewardship and significant economic impact in the state. As a result of the development of new methane regulations and the adoption of advanced technologies, methane emissions from New Mexico’s oil and gas industry decreased by 26% in 2023.

Flogistix by Flowco is a great example of how NMOGA member companies are developing innovative, environmentally friendly technologies in response to evolving regulatory conditions and market demand.

Operating in both of New Mexico’s major oil and gas basins with field offices in Bloomfield and Carlsbad, Flogistix specializes in emissions management solutions. Their technologies help oil and gas operators reduce emissions and comply with environmental standards. Their products, including vapor recovery units (VRUs) and leak detection devices, can reduce harmful methane emissions and improve profitability for operators.

Oil and gas producers have traditionally burned off excess natural gas and other volatile compounds released during oil production in a process known as flaring. This practice not only emits greenhouse gases that harm the environment but also worsens air quality and wastes valuable energy resources. VRUs offer an alternative by capturing, compressing, and processing these vapors, converting them into usable products such as propane and butane.

The vapor recovery process begins in storage tanks, where hydrocarbons naturally transform into vapors. Automated sensors detect rising pressure and direct these vapors through a network of pipes into the VRU’s compressor. There, the vapors are compressed, reducing their volume and preventing heavier hydrocarbons from prematurely condensing into liquids. After compression, the vapors are cooled and separated into liquids and gases based on their boiling points. Liquids, such as propane, can then be processed further, sold off, or used at the facility. Depending on quality, gases can either be sold as natural gas or used for energy production at the facility.

Vapor recovery systems help oil and gas companies lower their carbon footprint by capturing gases that would otherwise be vented or flared. This not only reduces environmental impact and ensures compliance with emissions regulations but also turns what was once waste into valuable products. Every molecule of vapor recovered represents additional revenue rather than an environmental liability.

Flogistix is helping New Mexico’s oil and gas industry provide affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy options worldwide. We’re proud to have them as a member and grateful for their work in supporting New Mexico’s economy and environment.
