NMOGA January Newsletter: Energizing New Mexico!

08 January, 2026

Happy New Year from the NMOGA team! We hope you had a wonderful holiday season with your loved ones and are ready to tackle the new year.

NMOGA is excited to share results from the New Mexico Tax Research Institute's latest report on the economic impact of oil and gas. In 2025, New Mexico's oil and gas industry generated $13 billion in state and local revenue. This money supports education, healthcare, and capital outlay programs that improve the lives of New Mexicans in every corner of the state.

This month, we're also highlighting the recent work NMOGA and our member companies have done in communities across the state. Our team threw pizza parties for our Ultimate Backpack Giveaway winners in Las Cruces, Hobbs, and Silver City. We attended Teach Plus NM's Economic Mobility Summit and Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham's Child Care Summit, and we welcomed Stan the T. Rex to the Western Heritage Museum

NMOGA is currently preparing for the 2026 Legislative Session, which will begin on January 20th at noon. While this year's session is only 30 days long, we will need your help to speak up and support our industry through public comments and letters to your elected officials. Please be on the lookout for emails from NMOGA to receive legislative updates and opportunities for engagement.

We're grateful for your support of the oil and gas industry in 2025, and we're excited to work together to make 2026 New Mexico's best year yet!

The oil and gas industry generated a staggering $13 billion for state and local governments last year. Revenue from the oil and gas industry supports:

  • $2.1 billion for healthcare and Medicaid funding
  • $680 million for public schools
  • $532 million for roads, bridges, and public facilities
  • $200 million for early childhood programs

This funding isn't exclusive to oil and gas-producing communities; it benefits New Mexicans across the state. Try out our interactive calculator to see how your household benefits directly from the oil and gas industry.

Once you've seen your results, make sure to share with your family and friends.

See how oil and gas work for you!

Teach Plus NM Economic Mobility Summit

NMOGA attended Teach Plus New Mexico’s Bridging Education & Industry: Cross-Sector Summit for Economic Mobility in Santa Fe last month. This convening served as a follow-up to NMOGA’s summer engagement with Teach Plus focused on strengthening education-to-career pathways for New Mexico students.

Students and educators highlighted that industry and community partners play a huge role in forming students' first professional networks. NMOGA is proud to support these professional networks through our focus on workforce development, education partnerships, and building sustainable talent pipelines across New Mexico.

NMOGA and the JF Maddox Foundation helped fund a collaborative project between the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science, the City of HobbsNew Mexico Junior College, the Western Heritage Museum & Lea County Cowboy Hall of Fame that brought Stan the T. Rex to Hobbs.

Stan is one of the most complete Tyrannosaurus Rex fossils ever found, and he now lives at the Western Heritage Museum as part of the new Permian Basin Natural History Project. NMOGA is proud to bring science, discovery, and connect our ancient past to our scientific and economic future.

Governor's Child Care Summit

NMOGA attended Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham’s Child Care Summit on Wednesday, December 17, bringing together state leaders, local governments, educators, financial institutions, and community organizations to address one of New Mexico’s most pressing quality-of-life and workforce issues: access to affordable, reliable childcare.

The oil and gas industry is proud to support childcare and early childhood education. In 2025, taxes from the oil and gas industry funded 90% of the Early Childhood Trust, which funds the Early Childhood Education Department and makes programs like universal childcare possible. We’re proud of the oil and gas industry’s contributions that will support New Mexico’s children and teachers and help local economies thrive.
