Not only does the industry produce the oil and natural gas needed to power and fuel our state, but the industry also contributes to the wellbeing of all New Mexicans in a number of ways.

The oil and natural gas industry employees over 100,000 New Mexicans. If you extrapolate that out to a family of four, as an example, the industry supports around 400,000 New Mexicans and their families. The industry supports non-oil and gas jobs as well, by utilizing construction, and other services like health care, restaurants, hotels, and retail.

The oil and natural gas community also invests in our state. The industry contributed an estimated $13.04 billion in 2023 to the state budget. These funds go to things like our schools, roads, and first responders. Additionally, and companies in the industry support their local communities across the state. For example, in 2024 ConocoPhillips donated more than $760,000 in charitable grants to 48 organizations in New Mexico as part of its annual grant program. These grants provided scholarships to kids across the state, supported our veterans, funded continuing education for teachers, enhanced community centers, equipped first responders and more.

The oil and natural gas industry prioritizes safety and environmental responsibility, consistently investing in innovative technologies to reduce its environmental impact. For instance, the industry employs water recycling techniques and accounts for less than 1% of the state's freshwater usage. Ongoing advancements in recycling and reuse technologies not only help the industry further reduce freshwater consumption but also present opportunities to support water-intensive sectors like agriculture. Additionally, emerging carbon capture technologies enable the industry to significantly lower emissions while benefiting other sectors, such as manufacturing and refining, by providing solutions to reduce their environmental footprint.
