NMOGA February Newsletter: Energizing New Mexico!

12 February, 2025

The New Mexico legislative session began on January 21st, and the oil and gas industry quickly became the target of harsh legislation that would send economic shockwaves throughout the state, devastating our economy and cutting funding to programs New Mexicans rely on.

Thank you to everyone who has already taken action in support of New Mexico's oil and gas industry this year! Please continue to support our efforts by contacting politicians in Santa Fe and encouraging others in your community to join us.

NMOGA is also proud to highlight the strong partnership between education and the oil and gas industry in New Mexico. This month we're highlighting Hannah Vanscotter from our Energy Pathways video series and NMOGA's sponsorship of the New Mexico Governor's STEM Challenge and New Mexico Agriculture in the Classroom.

Thank you for all you do to support New Mexico energy!

ENERGY PATHWAYS

Teacher Spotlight: Hannah Vanscotter

The oil and gas industry is proud to partner with our communities all across the state. In fiscal year 2024, oil and gas tax of more than $279 million went directly to New Mexico public school. We've talked with teachers about how the oil and gas industry is making an impact in the classroom, in addition to the tax revenue dollars.

Hannah VanScotter teaches Energy Pathway, Science, and Math at Carlsbad High School. Here she discusses how the energy industry provides real world applications to her students, encouraging them to dive in to math and science knowing the value it will bring to them in future careers.

GIVING BACK

NMOGA Supports Future Innovators at Governor’s STEM Challenge

NMOGA was proud to sponsor the New Mexico Governor’s STEM Challenge, supporting the next generation of problem-solvers across the state. Alongside NMOGA member Bret Lanier of Aztec Well Servicing Co., we had the privilege of judging 11 high school teams from across New Mexico, each presenting innovative solutions to real-world challenges.

A special congratulations to Navajo Preparatory School, whose project explored combining recycled plastic with asphalt to strengthen roads and reduce potholes across the state. Their forward-thinking approach to sustainability and infrastructure stood out among an impressive field of competitors.

NMOGA extends a huge thank you to Bret Lanier for being a fantastic judge and to our NMOGA member companies Chevron, Civitas Resources, and ExxonMobil for proudly representing the oil and gas industry as co-sponsors of the event. With over 30 sponsors from industries across New Mexico, this year’s challenge highlighted the power of cross-industry collaboration in supporting STEM education and workforce development.

New Mexico Agriculture in the Classroom

The New Mexico Agriculture in Classroom (NMAITC) extended their gratitude to NMOGA and all our members for our continued support, which helps them make a meaningful impact across New Mexico. In 2024, NMAITC reached 1,789 teachers, 19,946 students, and 1,334 volunteers through in-person educational opportunities. They also significantly expanded their outreach to the general public and grew their free online educator resources and social media presence.

Recently, NMOGA and its members were recognized in the Winter 2025 New Mexico Farm and Ranch magazine for supporting NMAITC’s important work. They emphasized that these achievements are only possible because of the incredible support from organizations like NMOGA and its members.

LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

During the 2025 New Mexico Legislative Session, legislators continue to propose bills that will not only affect the oil and gas industry but devastate New Mexico's economy. NMOGA is working to stop legislation that would increase energy costs for New Mexicans and cut state and local funding generated by the oil and gas industry.

Please contact politicians in Santa Fe to support our efforts and protect our future. Click here to email your legislators.
