NMOGA sat down with CTECH staff to discuss energizing students' futures. CTECH is a Career and Technical Education Center at Hobbs Municipal Schools that offers inspiring, hands-on career pathways, combining rigorous coursework with project-based learning in a collaborative setting for students seeking a deep understanding and active participation in high-demand professions.

Across New Mexico, students are showing up, putting in the work, and building something for their future—and NMOGA is proud to recognize that.

Through NMOGA’s Ultimate Backpack Giveaway, we’ve been able to travel across the state and celebrate students in a way that’s meaningful for them and their entire classroom. Each winning student receives a backpack filled with everything they need to succeed—including an iPad, keyboard, and school supplies—along with a pizza party for their class.

The New Mexico legislative session began on January 20th, and the oil and gas industry quickly became the target of harsh legislation that would send economic shockwaves throughout the state, raising electricity costs and forcing businesses to move out of state. 

The worst of this legislation, Senate Bill 18, was heard on the Senate Floor this afternoon and failed to pass. This is a win for families and businesses across the state, as SB 18 would have increased cost of living expenses while decreasing economic opportunity. 

We extend a huge thank you to everyone, including all of the businesses, chambers, associations, trades, communities, and more, who took action in New Mexico. Your voices were instrumental in opposing this harmful legislation. NMOGA is also deeply grateful for the 23 Senators who voted in opposition to SB 18. 

In addition to our legislative efforts, NMOGA is proud to highlight our work in education and our support of students and teachers across the state. NMOGA's Energizing Our Future NM non-profit recently launched its Pathways to Success website to support students' future in the energy industry. NMOGA also recognized the important work NM Teacher of the Year, Nancy Orta; NMACTE Teacher of the Year, Hannah VanScotter; and NM Tech do for our state.

Oil And Gas Revenue—The Lifeline Behind New Mexico’s Progress

Our state is a special place to live and work. In recent years, we’ve seen opportunities that create multi-generational benefits. The Opportunity Scholarship that has increased New Mexicans’ access to higher education and trade schools. The potential of childcare for all. Even dollars that ensured those on SNAP would not go hungry when the benefits paused. Strengthening the middle class and lifting those out of poverty through affordable, sustainable energy options. Lending a helping hand is something New Mexicans are proud of, and this state can provide that leg up solely because of the oil and gas industry.

Petroleum-based products are used in ornaments, artificial trees, lights, and toys. Fuel for homes and transportation makes celebrations possible, even on cold winter days.

NMOGA is excited to share results from the New Mexico Tax Research Institute's latest report on the economic impact of oil and gas. In 2025, New Mexico's oil and gas industry generated $13 billion in state and local revenue. This money supports education, healthcare, and capital outlay programs that improve the lives of New Mexicans in every corner of the state.

This month, we're also highlighting the recent work NMOGA and our member companies have done in communities across the state. Our team threw pizza parties for our Ultimate Backpack Giveaway winners in Las Cruces, Hobbs, and Silver City. We attended Teach Plus NM's Economic Mobility Summit and Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham's Child Care Summit, and we welcomed Stan the T. Rex to the Western Heritage Museum. 

NMOGA is currently preparing for the 2026 Legislative Session, which will begin on January 20th at noon. While this year's session is only 30 days long, we will need your help to speak up and support our industry through public comments and letters to your elected officials. With Thanksgiving just around the corner, the New Mexico Oil & Gas Association is taking time to recognize the essential role the industry plays during the holiday season. Gas heats our homes when it's cold outside and helps cook tasty Thanksgiving meals. Oil is essential for transportation, shipping food to grocery stores and bringing families together. Oil and gas byproducts are an essential part of many appliances throughout your home, including refrigerators, nonstick cooking utensils, storage containers, dish soap, and more. Oil & gas are truly a part of our everyday life. 

This past month, NMOGA celebrated the role of oil and gas in communities across New Mexico. Our team attended the Carlsbad Mayor's Energy Summit, the San Juan Basin Energy Conference, Coterra Energy's Educator Exchange, and a Power Hour in Artesia with the American Petroleum Institute. NMOGA also provided supplies for the McKinney-Vento Program's Youth and Family Housing Resource Fair in Albuquerque and joined ExxonMobil in supporting education and community collaboration. 

We're grateful for New Mexico's oil and gas industry for meaningfully investing in our communities and providing affordable energy for families and businesses across the state.

Every October, the skies over Albuquerque come alive with color, creativity, and joy. The Balloon Fiesta in Albuquerque isn’t just a local tradition — it’s a global phenomenon. It’s the most photographed event in the world, a celebration of innovation and imagination that brings together families, tourists, and balloonists from across the globe.

September was a big month for education in New Mexico and at NMOGA! The New Mexico Department of Public Education announced Ms. Nancy Orta as their 2026 New Mexico Teacher of the Year. NMOGA is proud to sponsor the program and support professional development opportunities for her over the next year. Congratulations to Ms. Orta and all of the finalists!

NMOGA continued our support for Career Technical Education (CTE) by sponsoring the Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce's Education Matters Luncheon and hosting an interactive STEM virtual reality booth at the New Mexico State Fair, brought to you by Chevron.

School is back in session, and we've been focusing on all the ways the oil and gas industry powers education in New Mexico. In 2024, the oil and gas industry provided $2.3 billion through tax revenue to support New Mexico public schools and championed many educational initiatives throughout the state. Additionally, oil and gas products are used in many essential school supplies and for transportation and power.
